The Southern Highlands is growing in popularity as a close-at-hand getaway for Sydney based mountain bikers. Wingello is probably the best-known spot but there other trail networks too such as Welby, Penrose State Forest, Bundanoon, Exeter and Kangaroo Valley.

Now in its 5th edition, Mountain Bike Trails of the Southern Highlands covers all of these locations with a detailed 1:25000 scale topographic map and helpful trail descriptions. It also includes all of the new route options within the Wingello trails.

Previously Wingello had three basic loops; the 7km Blue trail, 18km Yellow and 24km Red trail. Now Highland Trails has broken this down to include Pink, Orange, Brown and Purple loops. With distances ranging from 5km through to 18km they offer alternate combinations that are based on existing trails. The map also shows a range of ‘escape routes’ that can be used if you need to bail out due to a mechanical or physical blowout!

The Southern Highlands MTB map sells for $19 and is available from Wild Horizons or from Destination Southern Highlands Welcome Centre in Mittagong, NPWS Fitzroy Falls Visitors Centre, Ye Olde Bicycle Shoppe in Bundanoon, Wingello General Store and Exeter General Store.
